How home services & contractors get recommended by AI
We cannot see inside the engines. What our tests show is where their answers came from: third-party platforms far more often than a business’s own website, which made up 5% of the citations we logged across all industries. For contractors we would expect those platforms to be Google Business Profile, Yelp, Angi and the BBB. We have not yet tested enough contractors to confirm it. These are our recommendations:
- Complete, consistent listings on Google Business Profile, Yelp, Angi, HomeAdvisor and the BBB, with your licence number visible.
- Service and area pages that answer the questions homeowners ask: what a new HVAC system costs in Greenville, how fast you respond in Simpsonville, whether you are licensed and insured.
- Named people, photos of real crews, and structured data (HomeAndConstructionBusiness schema) that says who you are and where you work.
- A steady flow of reviews, answered.

Usually. ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro and Jobber each have an API, though access can depend on your plan or need approval. Within the permissions you give it, the agent reads the schedule, creates jobs and updates records. We confirm what your account allows on the first call.
We get most of our work from word of mouth. Does this matter?
Word of mouth still matters, and reviews are part of what AI answers draw on: Yelp and other third-party platforms were among the most-cited sources in our tests. We have not tested enough contractors to give you a rate, which is what the free check is for.
